May 30, 2001 -- Rabbi Hershel Billet of Woodmere, NY was elected president of the Rabbinical Council of America, the world's largest Orthodox rabbinic organization, at its Sixty-Fifth Annual National Convention at the Rye Town Hilton, Westchester, New York.

Rabbi Steven M. Dworken, Executive Vice President, commented, "Rabbi Billet was elected president due to his standing in the Orthodox rabbinate, his leadership qualities, and his ability to analyze and comprehend the major issues facing the Jewish community today. Rabbi Billet has a wonderful ability to establish both personal and professional relationships, and the rabbinate and the Jewish community will surely be the beneficiaries of his counsel and leadership. He truly is a Baal Hesed, a man of wonderful personality traits."

Rabbi Billet has served as spiritual leader of The Young Israel of Woodmere of Woodmere, New York, for 21 years. A native of New York, Rabbi Billet was educated and ordained at Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University.

Rabbi Billet has lectured widely and has published numerous articles in Jewish journals and publications. He has been at the forefront of promulgating a safe and secure Israel and has raised significant funds for its defense.

Rabbi Billet and his wife Rookie, proud parents and grandparents, reside in Woodmere, New York.

The Rabbinical Council of America is the world's largest body of Orthodox Rabbis serving communities throughout the world with its headquarters in New York and Jerusalem.
